- It’s not simply that, as its democratizers suggest, everyone should be eligible for the burnout diagnosis—a universalizing project that risks defanging burnout as a term of critique. Rather, it’s that burnout names a power relation between tenant and landlord, worker and boss, and other lines of domination. If we attend carefully to the origins of the term, we can re-center the disenfranchised as the principal subjects of a story in which many others are implicated, and, ultimately, many others suffer.
